How does the German tax system work?
In Germany, employees pay income tax on their salary. The amount depends on your income:
| Annual Income | Tax Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to €12,096 | 0% (tax-free) |
| €12,097 - €68,480 | 14% - 42% (progressive) |
| From €68,481 | 42% - 45% |
Important: You do NOT pay the full tax rate on your entire income! The tax rate increases progressively – only income above the allowance is taxed.
Special considerations for foreign workers
Tax Classes
Germany has different tax classes. As a foreign worker, you'll usually be classified in Tax Class I (single).
Double Taxation Agreements
Germany has agreements with many countries to avoid double taxation. Check if your home country has an agreement with Germany.
Automatic Tax Deductions
If you're an employee, your employer automatically deducts taxes from your salary. You don't need to do anything!
